Modern society is rapidly becoming more interconnected and complex, and criminal investigations are reaching the limits of what the conventional, compartmentalized police organization can handle. To tackle all manner of "borderline cases" that existing divisions cannot adequately address, including murders involving cybercrime and international drug trafficking, a special unit under the direct authority of the Superintendent General of the Metropolitan Police Department was established: the SCU (Special Cases Unit).
